Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre 2025 | Marcel Lapierre
The Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre is the signature wine of Domaine Marcel Lapierre, founded in 1909 in Villié-Morgon, in the heart of the Beaujolais region. It bears the name of the man who, as early as the 1980s, rejected standardized methods to champion wines that are authentic, vibrant, and free of artifice. An act of resistance that has become a benchmark, contributing to the region’s renaissance in quality. Today, Mathieu and Camille Lapierre carry on this legacy with the same quiet rigor. The philosophy remains unchanged: let the grape, the terroir, and the vintage speak for themselves.
Terroir and Grape Varieties
The vines are rooted in soils of weathered granite, which local winemakers call “roc pourri”: crumbly, well-drained, and nutrient-poor. The plots stretch across the Côte du Py, Corcelette, and Montplain—three iconic lieux-dits of the appellation. There, the Gamay noir achieves a depth it finds nowhere else in the Beaujolais. The old vines, averaging 45 years of age, draw a unique mineral energy from this granite bedrock. The 2025 vintage, sunny but hampered by fruit drop and a summer heatwave, yielded a small harvest. Pure fruit, beautiful ripeness, and preserved freshness: the balance is rare for the year.
Viticulture and Winemaking
The wine estate is certified organic, with biodynamic practices in the vineyards; the vines are trained using the gobelet pruning method and harvested by hand with rigorous sorting. Winemaking follows the Lapierre method: semi-carbonic maceration with indigenous yeasts, with no SO₂ added during fermentation. Ageing lasts 9 months in old Burgundy vats and barrels. Bottling is done without filtration or fining, with only a slight adjustment of sulfur at bottling. A natural wine in the strictest sense of the term.
Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre 2025 | Marcel Lapierre: The Sommelier’s Review
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
This 2025 Morgon is vibrant and juicy, with a purity of fruit that the sunny vintage has concentrated without making it heavy. It is the most convincing demonstration of what Gamay grown on granite can offer: depth, energy, and that taut, luscious character that is Lapierre’s signature. It can be opened right now, after decanting for half an hour at 16°C. The peak drinking period is between 2027 and 2034: there’s plenty of reason to be patient—or not.
The Nose
The nose opens with fresh morello cherry and juicy raspberry, with a subtle hint of violet. A touch of sweet licorice adds structure to the whole. In the background, a note of flint evokes the granite of the Côte du Py: mineral, precise, and unpretentious.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and enveloping, supported by round, well-integrated tannins. The vintage’s natural acidity provides liveliness without harshness. Cherry and raspberry flavors return, enhanced by a slight spicy note. The finish is long and mouth-watering, with that mineral energy that lingers and makes you want to take another sip.
Morgon: Everything You Need to Know About This Appellation
Morgon is one of the ten crus of the Beaujolais region, and undoubtedly the most structured among them. Its granite-rich slopes, located around Villié-Morgon, produce Gamay noir wines with a density and aging potential that are atypical for the appellation. The phenomenon of “Morgonization” is well documented: over time, these wines develop complex notes of ripe fruit, spices, and forest floor that are more reminiscent of Burgundy than of typical Beaujolais.
The Cuvée Marcel Lapierre embodies this identity with its own distinct character: it simply expresses what this granite soil and this grape variety have to say together. In this regard, it remains, vintage after vintage, an essential benchmark for the appellation.
