The Le Cran de Bérêche & Fils Premier Cru Champagne is the wine estate’s flagship and most personal cuvée, named after the vineyard parcel that has bordered the village of Ludes for generations and has been home to the heart of the family’s vineyard since its founding in 1847. A blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it combines two complementary plots of old vines: Le Cran, planted with Chardonnay on west-facing slopes in 1969, and Saint-Jean, planted with Pinot Noir on east-facing slopes in 1973, both rooted in dense, chalky soils at the heart of the mid-slope of Ludes, where, according to Raphaël Bérêche himself, the minerality surpasses that of the lower slopes of neighboring grands crus. This vintage Champagne, produced each year as a faithful reflection of the terroir and climate, is tailor-made for fine dining and long-term aging.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Premier Cru Champagne Le Cran by Bérêche & Fils represents one of the most compelling expressions of what the Montagne de Reims can offer when guided by a winemaker as meticulous as Raphaël Bérêche.
The nose opens with an autumnal character and great depth, evoking dried fruits and candied citrus, accented by a hint of dried porcini mushrooms that defines this cuvée’s particularly vinous character. A delicate floral dimension gradually emerges with aeration, while a chalky, almost powdery note settles at the bottom of the glass, recalling the deeply calcareous nature of the Ludes terroir.
On the palate, the structure is powerful and precise, driven by a lively, taut, and lively acidity that stretches the wine with striking verticality. The bubbles, of exemplary finesse and subtlety, reveal flavors of candied citrus, toasted hazelnut, and damp chalk, leading to a long, salty, and mineral finish of remarkable persistence.
