Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs Monopole de Marquis d'Angerville is not just a wine, it's a historic monument of the Côte de Beaune. This 2.15-hectare climat en monopole is often compared to a Grand Cru because of its complexity and phenomenal ageing potential. Under the direction of Guillaume d'Angerville, this terroir has become the emblem of a pure, vibrant Burgundy of absolute precision. Already long identified in the hierarchy of local terroirs, this historic clos owes its name to the Dukes of Burgundy, to whom it once belonged. Indeed, at the beginning of the 16th century, an official deed listed this parcel as 52 ouvrées at the time - an area that has remained unchanged ever since, since 1 hectare corresponds to 24 ouvrées. The south-east exposure guarantees optimum sunshine for the old Pinot Noir vines, which flourish on the steep slopes, whose high concentration of stony limestone and white marl ensures optimal drainage. Respect for vines and nature is at the heart of the Domaine Marquis d'Angerville philosophy, and all vines have been biodynamically farmed since 2006. With ploughed soils, natural treatments and manual care, all work is designed to respect the vines. The hand-picked grapes are completely destemmed before fermentation on indigenous yeasts, to ensure the gentlest possible extraction. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is gravity-fed into oak barrels, where the proportion of new wood never exceeds 20%. Ageing lasts around 18 months.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Clos des Ducs is the flagship of Domaine Marquis d'Angerville. Overlooking the village of Volnay, this walled vineyard is a geological curiosity. It's a "vertical" terroir, literally and figuratively. Contrary to the restrained image of Volnay wines, Clos des Ducs imposes a sovereign structure and mineral depth that are on a par with the greatest Burgundy wines. Behind its great elegance, it expresses with disarming purity the soul of Burgundian limestone. To be followed over the next two decades!

This Clos des Ducs Monopole from Domaine Marquis d'Angerville immediately seduces with its remarkable complexity, between juicy red berries, a delicate floral dimension and a spicy framework of black pepper, smoked tea and hot stone. The intensity of the bouquet grows as the wine opens up, offering a rare olfactory fullness from its earliest youth, which will reward the most patient after a decade or so in the cellar.

The palate mirrors the nose, intense and voluptuous. The acidity is streamlined, stretching the wine over a chalky minerality of infinite freshness. Yet the lacey tannins are still very much present, structuring the seductive substance of a formidably tasty chew. Flavors of red and black fruits and noble spices coat the palate with complex layers of timeless elegance. The acidic persistence of the finish gives this great wine a long, delicate finish. Superb!
