The Burgundy Côte d’Or Les Grandes Gouttes 2023 from Domaine Rougeot Père & Fils comes from a specific vineyard site located just 500 meters from the Meursault-Charmes Premier Cru, on the border between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. A prime location, at the heart of terroirs renowned for their freshness and minerality. The 2023 vintage also marks an important milestone for the estate, with its first Demeter certification, which recognizes its commitment to biodynamics.
The Les Grandes Gouttes vineyard is characterized by its clay-limestone soils, typical of the Côte de Beaune. The clay retains water during dry periods, while the limestone imparts freshness and minerality. The Chardonnay grown here produces a wine that is both straightforward and balanced, combining the mineral finesse of Puligny-Montrachet with a more subtle roundness, reminiscent of the whites of Meursault.
The estate has been certified organic since 2020 and Demeter-certified since 2023. The grapes are harvested by hand and then vinified with minimal intervention: alcoholic fermentation occurs using indigenous yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation directly in barrels. The wine is then aged for 18 months in oak barrels, with only 5% new oak used for this cuvée. This choice allows the terroir to express itself without the wood imposing too much of its character on the wine. Finally, only a homeopathic dose of sulfur is added at bottling to preserve the wine’s natural character as much as possible.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
This wine holds a special place in the estate’s lineup. Just a few hundred meters away, some of the most renowned Premier Crus of the Côte de Beaune thrive on neighboring terroirs. This Bourgogne Côte d’Or, made without added sulfur and Demeter-certified from its very first vintage, should appeal to lovers of Burgundian Chardonnay. A few years of cellaring will allow it to develop greater harmony and gradually reveal its minerality. It can also be enjoyed now, served at around 12 °C, without extended decanting.
The Nose
The nose combines white flowers with fresh citrus, along with a subtle note of roasted pear. A mineral touch rounds out this delicate bouquet. The wine maintains a pure and natural character from start to finish, true to its terroir.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with lovely body without heaviness. The acidity provides tension, while the texture remains supple and silky. The 18 months of barrel aging, with very little new oak, add roundness without masking the fruit. The finish lingers with a salty, mineral note.
The Bourgogne Côte d’Or appellation is one of the most precisely defined regional designations in the Burgundy hierarchy. It covers exclusively the communes of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, renowned for their limestone hills and great terroirs. In white wines, Chardonnay expresses all its freshness and minerality here, beautifully showcasing the terroir. The 2023 Les Grandes Gouttes vintage is a fine example of this appellation’s potential. Located on the border of two renowned communes in the Côte de Beaune, it is vinified without added sulfur prior to bottling, to faithfully reflect the character of its terroir and the care taken in its production. For the estate, it is above all the lieu-dit that gives the wine its identity.
