The Givry 1er Cru A Vigne Rouge 2024 from Domaine François Lumpp stands out as one of the most distinctive wines of southern Burgundy. Based in Givry, in the Côte Chalonnaise, François Lumpp treats each climat as a distinct entity. This cuvée, sourced from a 2.45-hectare plot, clearly illustrates what the appellation is capable of at its very best. The vines are descended from massal selections from the Clos du Tart, which is no small matter: this is genetic material of rare richness, passed down to a terroir that deserves this legacy. Today, Isabelle and François Lumpp, along with their children Pierre and Anne-Cécile, run the estate.
The “A Vigne Rouge” parcel stretches across slopes facing predominantly south, at an elevation of approximately 255–259 meters. The soils there consist of limestone and fine marl, a combination that naturally challenges the vines. The vines draw water from deep underground, yield sparingly, and produce a Pinot Noir with a structural elegance rarely found at this level of the appellation. The limestone contributes tension and minerality; the marl, roundness and structure. The balance between the two defines the style of this cuvée.
The estate tends its vines by hand, using pruning, light hilling, and stone removal to ensure the vines’ health. The hand-harvested grapes undergo rigorous sorting. They are then fully destemmed and undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration before fermentation in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. Aging lasts 12 months in oak barrels, 70% of which are new. This choice is deliberate: it refines the wine and rounds out its character without ever overwhelming the terroir’s mineral tension.

At Domaine François Lumpp, each climat is treated as a unique work of art. This 2024 is no exception. What stands out here is its precision: intensity and restraint in perfect balance, always serving the limestone terroir. The fact that the vines trace their origins to massal selections from the Clos du Tart gives this wine a genetic depth that is evident in the finesse of its texture. I recommend serving this wine around 16°C, decanting the 2024 for about thirty minutes. The window for peak enjoyment is between 2029 and 2036: patience is required, but it will be rewarded.
The Nose
The nose opens with black cherry and candied blueberry—ripe fruits without any heaviness. Peony and licorice then make a subtle appearance. Mild spices and a hint of cocoa round out the profile. It’s a precise nose, without any frills. A limestone-like minerality emerges in the background, like a signature.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is full-bodied, with dark fruit very much present. The tannins, still slightly tight in 2024, already show a fine, promising texture. The natural acidity of Pinot Noir on limestone lends a lovely structure. Floral and spicy notes take over from the fruit in the mid-palate. The finish is mineral, persistent, with a velvety texture imparted by barrel aging.
The Givry 1er Cru appellation is part of the Côte Chalonnaise in southern Burgundy. It primarily produces red wines made from Pinot Noir, grown on limestone and marl soils that give the wines a characteristic mineral tension. Although less well-known than the Côte de Nuits or the Côte de Beaune, Givry nonetheless offers Premier Crus of remarkable precision, with levels of ripeness that the 2024 vintage seems to confirm.
