Domaine de Villaine 's Mercurey Les Montots embodies a singular vision of the Côte Chalonnaise, where Pinot Noir reveals a more assertive, intense and earthy facet. From the south-facing slopes of the Les Montots vineyard, this wine comes from a warm, demanding terroir, carefully cultivated using organic methods. Planted with massal selection from Nuits-Saint-Georges, the vines give birth to a full-bodied Mercurey with remarkable ageing potential and a unique aromatic identity.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : This Mercurey Les Montots from Domaine de Villaine has all the makings of a great wine. It's as full-bodied as it is full-bodied, and carries its complex aromas with great energy. It's a Pinot Noir with a solar, powerful and racy character. Its tannic structure and balance promise a peak drinking in 5 to 7 years in the right conditions. It will benefit from long decanting or serving in a generous Burgundy glass, to reveal its full complexity.
The first nose is immediately surprising: notes of noble leather, jammy Morello cherries and cloves entwine with a hint of blood and sap, affirming the wine's energetic character. As it opens up, the bouquet gains in depth and already suggests pairings with full-bodied dishes.
On the palate, the structure impresses with controlled tannic density, ample volume and straightforward minerality. The wine is powerful without being heavy. You can tell that time will gracefully polish the peppery tannin grain typical of the Montots terroir. The finish is long, very ripe, marked by spicy, earthy and slightly gamey notes.
