Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martins 2022 Bruno Lorenzon | Burgundy
Domaine Bruno Lorenzon 's Mercurey 1er Cru Les Champs Martin is the wine estate's flagship...
The 2024 Teppe des Chenèves white Givry offers a Chardonnay that is both crisp and smooth, driven by the mineral tension of the limestone, which 12 months of barrel aging has just barely softened. With a peak expected between 2027 and 2032, this white wine from the Côte Chalonnaise is well worth a closer look.

The 2024 Teppe des Chenèves White Givry from Domaine François Lumpp is one of the most exclusive wines of the Côte Chalonnaise. This vineyard site has a unique history: these limestone soils, once used for viticulture, were abandoned in favor of pastureland. It was the Lumpp family who decided, in a bold move—almost a gamble—to replant them with Chardonnay in the early 2000s. Today, some thirty years later, the vines have had time to take root and come to understand their soil.
The Teppe des Chenèves vineyard is situated on a steep, well-drained hillside. The limestone subsoil forces the vines to draw water from deep underground, a characteristic that is directly reflected in the wine’s tension. The full eastern exposure provides a precious morning coolness that preserves the Chardonnay’s natural acidity. This site is sometimes referred to as a “high-altitude” Chardonnay, in reference to the harsh climate imposed by the hillside.
The estate stopped using chemical weed control in 1995. The soil is worked by hand: scraping, light hilling, and stone removal punctuate the growing season. The harvest is done by hand, and the grapes are sorted by hand before being pressed as whole clusters. Fermentation begins in stainless steel tanks after settling, using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels, with approximately 30% of the barrels replaced with new oak. This ratio is precise and intentional: the wood allows the wine to breathe without overpowering it. The mineral character remains intact.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
What I appreciate about this cuvée is its integrity. The limestone terroir expresses itself directly; the winemaking process does not seek to compensate for it. This is far from a complacent Chardonnay. The Côte Chalonnaise offers here a precise expression of itself—less well-known than the Côte de Beaune, but no less legitimate. The 2024 Teppe des Chenèves white Givry places minerality front and center, with a lively acidity that ensures it will age beautifully between 2027 and 2032. At the table, serve it around 12°C with zucchini blossoms stuffed with shredded crab meat and raw cream, or tagliatelle made from violin-shaped zucchini in a mild curry: the wine’s creaminess complements that of the dish without being overwhelmed by it.
The Nose
The nose opens with notes of crisp pear and slightly candied citrus. White flowers lend an ethereal delicacy. A hint of iodine and white pepper adds definition to the bouquet, giving it depth. The balance between fruit and mineral is crystal clear, without any frills.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is velvety, carried by generous white fruit and a full-bodied texture. The oak influence remains very subtle, almost seamless. The acidity runs through the wine from start to finish, precisely balancing its natural richness. The finish lingers on a fresh and lively mineral note. A solid length that makes you want to take another sip.
Givry is an appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise region of Burgundy, located between Chalon-sur-Saône and Buxy. The white wines here are made exclusively from Chardonnay, grown on limestone and clay-limestone soils that lend the wines a lovely mineral tension. Long overshadowed by the great Côte de Beaune appellations, Givry has been gaining increasing recognition in recent years, particularly for its white wines.
Le Teppe des Chenèves exemplifies the finest white wine Givry has to offer: a terroir-driven wine, uncompromising in its style, crafted by a winemaker who has made patience his guiding principle. It is a cuvée that represents the appellation at its most authentic.
