Chartreuse Jaune 70cl | Les Pères Chartreux
Chartreuse Jaune is one of the most unique liqueurs in existence. Crafted since 1840 by the Carthusian Fathers in the heart of the Chartreuse Mountains in the French Alps, it is part of a centuries-old monastic tradition. Its history dates back to 1764, when the monks deciphered an ancient manuscript to establish the recipe for the Élixir Végétal. Chartreuse Jaune naturally became the sweeter variation of this elixir. The “Chartreuse” trademark was officially registered in 1852 by Father Garnier.
A secret held by four hands
This is the founding mystery behind all the Chartreux Fathers’ cuvées. The recipe, passed down from generation to generation since the 17th century, combines 130 plants, flowers, barks, roots, and spices. Only two Carthusian monks know the secrets of these botanicals and the method for blending them. No one else, apart from these two men, possesses the full knowledge.
Production and Aging
The production process is long and meticulous. The monks themselves grind the plants, carry out successive macerations, and perform the distillation. The entire process requires several weeks of work. The liqueur is then aged for a long time in truncated-cone-shaped oak vats, where it gains roundness and complexity. It is this patient ageing process that gives Chartreuse Jaune its distinctive, silky, and harmonious texture.
Chartreuse Jaune 70cl | Les Pères Chartreux: The Sommelier’s Review
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
Often dubbed the “Queen of Liqueurs,” Chartreuse Jaune reveals itself to be sweeter, more floral, and rounder than Chartreuse Verte, without losing an ounce of complexity or aromatic power. What strikes me with every tasting is the absolute harmony of the flavors: none of the 130 ingredients overpowers the others. Serve it chilled, between 12 and 13°C, or over ice to bring out its herbal freshness. It continues to evolve in the bottle, developing greater complexity over time.
Chartreuse Jaune is a liqueur of patience and precision, a reflection of monastic craftsmanship that nothing in the industrial world can imitate.
The Nose
The nose opens with a floral and spicy bouquet of great finesse. Yellow flowers and chamomile set the tone, fresh and luminous. Next come honey and beeswax, which bring an enveloping sweetness without heaviness. A hint of saffron and candied citrus runs through the entire profile. The base is herbal, subtle, and slightly anise-like.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is round and generous. The texture is velvety, silky, and remarkably harmonious. A lovely freshness sweeps across the palate, balancing the liqueur’s natural sweetness. Mild spices, floral notes, and a delicate herbal touch give structure to the finish. Long, elegant, and lingering: Chartreuse Jaune does not fade quickly.
