Wine Description
Clos Constantin’s Argile cuvée was born from a risky gamble: vines grafted with Chenin, a grape variety one wouldn’t expect to find under the Languedoc sun. The vineyard is located in Argelliers, in the far southeast of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, on clay-limestone and quartz soils that provide a cool climate conducive to slow, balanced ripening. The terroir is renowned as one of the coolest—if not the coolest—in the appellation, a coolness in which Chenin thrives here just as it does in its native Loire Valley.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Argile cuvée from Clos Constantin is an infinitely fresh white wine. This wine has a crystalline, precise, and briny profile, with that extra touch of Loire freshness that we love in the South. The consistency of Pierre and Samuel Durand is impressive; freshness and precision come together with a rare boldness.
The initial nose evokes notes of summer fruit and sweet almond. It quickly evolves toward a very delicate minerality and candied citrus.
On the palate, the tension is at its peak for a wine from a southern terroir, with a saline, precise dimension—almost Loire-like in its straightforwardness. This is a Languedoc Chenin that is every bit as good as its Loire cousins.
