Wine Description

Volnay Les Famines du Clos du Moulin aux Moines embodies the quintessential Côte de Beaune red, with a taut yet delicate expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir . From a small 0.18-hectare vineyard planted since 1996 on a gravelly soil of red clay and limestone, the Les Famines climat runs along the southeastern slope of Volnay. Le Clos du Moulin aux Moines is rooted in respect for the soil and the living world, and practises organic and biodynamic viticulture without inputs or mechanization. The vines are tended with meticulous care, favoring minimal intervention and hand-picking to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Winemaking is carried out without oenological inputs, favoring long fermentations with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then gravity-filled into old oak barrels for 12 months' ageing. This sobriety aims to support the structure without masking the purity of the fruit, enabling the cuvée to faithfully reflect the particular terroir of Les Famines.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Volnay Les Famines stands out for its subtle balance between concentration and elegance. It reveals the singularity of Clos du Moulin aux Moines wines, where each parcel precisely delivers the essence of its terroir. The profile of this Volnay is already harmonious, but its tannic qualities and structure suggest an interesting ageing potential over the next decade. The finesse of this cuvée underlines the complementarity between rigorous cultivation and nuanced power, the signature of contemporary Burgundy.

On the nose, first impressions reveal a rich, complex aromatic palette. Notes of crisp red fruit mingle with ripe wild berries, while floral accents accompany a hint of zesty citrus. Aeration brings out deep, already evolved notes of damp, slightly smoky undergrowth, blond tobacco and sweet spices.

On the palate, the attack impresses with its concentration and velvety tannins, enveloping the palate without heaviness. Black fruit aromas unfold with an almost sensual touch, while licorice notes bring a rich, savory vivacity. Ripe acidity lends the wine a balancing freshness without overpowering the aromatic concentration of the finish, where remarkably precise spicy and smoky afterglow lingers. The epitome of Côte de Beaune red elegance!
