Description of Silex 2020 | Domaine Didier Dagueneau

Silex is, without a doubt, the flagship wine of Domaine Dagueneau. Produced on the hillsides of Saint-Andelain in the Loire Valley, this Sauvignon Blanc embodies Didier Dagueneau’s uncompromising and simply brilliant vision. Now crafted by the expert hand of his son, Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, this cuvée has lost none of its splendor—quite the contrary.

Terroir and Grape Variety

It all starts with the soil. The plots selected for this cuvée rest on hard soils rich in flint—those siliceous rocks that give the wine its characteristic tension and almost electric minerality. Spanning nearly 4 hectares, the Sauvignon Blanc vines—ranging in age from about 20 to nearly 80 years—cover the upper slopes of the Saint-Andelain hillside. Physiological ripening is particularly slow here, which helps preserve the berries’ freshness and acidity, despite the 2020 vintage being marked by a scorching, dry summer.

Viticulture and Winemaking

The estate practices biodynamics, combined with rigorous organic farming. Yields are deliberately kept low, the harvest is entirely manual, and fermentation is carried out exclusively by indigenous yeasts. For this vintage, aging is varied: barriques, demi-muids, ovoid tanks, Wineglobes, and ceramic eggs, all for 12 months. This choice of varied containers aims to preserve the wine’s natural complexity, as each container provides a different level of micro-oxygenation.

Silex 2020 | Domaine Didier Dagueneau: The Sommelier’s Review

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

A landmark of the Loire Valley’s winemaking tradition, Domaine Dagueneau’s Silex is one of those rare wines whose tasting leaves a lasting impression on both the mind and the palate. Few Sauvignon Blancs in the world achieve this mineral clarity and varietal purity. It is expected to reach its peak between 2029 and 2036: the reward is well worth the wait. Serve at around 11°C, ideally after a brief decanting when young.

The Nose

The nose opens with a crisp, chalky minerality, where flinty aromas mingle with pleasant notes of fresh citrus, citron, and white flowers. A few hints of orchard fruit indicate the optimal maturity achieved in this vintage.

Palate

The palate is taut, almost sharp at first, before broadening into a full-bodied and lively texture. The acidity retains its tight, almost crystalline edge throughout the tasting, while the smoky, flinty minerality and the chalky texture of the terroir impart a delicately salty bitterness, whose lingering presence on the finish invites another sip.
