Long description
Domaine du Coulet is a wine estate in the northern Rhône Valley created in 1998 by Matthieu Barret. The vines are located mainly in the Cornas and Côtes du Rhône appellations. They have been farmed organically and biodynamically from the outset. The soil is worked by draught horse on all the granite slopes.
Matthieu Barret's aim is to create the most natural wines possible. This is achieved by applying a variety of cultivation methods. In addition to working biodynamically, he severely reduces his yields, which averagearound 25 hectolitres per hectare. He regularly sorts the grapes in the vineyard before harvesting, to ensure that only bunches of exceptional quality are kept.
In the cellar, the best possible means are employed to ensure that the wines are not rushed. Long, gentle pressing, gravity flow, no added sulfur at any stage of winemaking.
Ageing takes place in tuns and barrels that have already contained wines. This method brings a beautiful oxygenation to the wine, without any woody overtones.
Matthieu Barret also uses concrete vats known as Ovoïdes. These are actually egg-shaped vats. These vats are used exclusively for winemaking white wines.
In recent years, Matthieu Barret has shown himself to be one of the finest winemakers in the Northern Rhône Valley. Matthieu Barret's cuvée Billes Noires 2016 is a real winner!
