Entering the Gauby wine estate is like stepping out of civilization. Time seems to stand still. Vegetation has reclaimed its rights from man, and it's simply magnificent. The Gauby wine estate benefits from an exceptional environment, with over 85 hectares of land, including 45 hectares of vines that are totally protected from other crops. Respect for the terroir has been a priority for the Gauby family for several generations. Their work in organic and biodynamic agriculture gives the wines depths rarely achieved in the Roussillon. The wine estate has come a long way since son Lionel Gauby took over, and he attaches great importance to making fresh, fine, drinkable wines.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Respect for the terroir and polyculture are the watchwords of the Gauby family, who have never stopped evolving to make their wines grow. Domaine Gauby is still one of the most prestigious wine estates in the Roussillon region, and rightly so in my opinion.
On the nose, you think the wine is going to reveal great power and a very animal side. This is not the case, but rather a subtle, elegant wine with great aromatic finesse. Notes of black fruit (blueberry, blackcurrant) mingle with a hint of spice (white pepper). A hint of smoky tea adds a touch of rusticity to this well-balanced wine.
On the palate, the attack is supple, with fine, silky tannins. The fruit is very pleasant and greedy. A slightly mentholated sensation of freshness develops in retro-olfaction. It's truly impressive how digestible and fine this wine is for this type of terroir. Another great wine perfectly executed by the Gauby family.
