Wine Description
The cuvée Les Chaillées de l'Enfer was created in 1992. It refers to the terroir where the vines are planted, i.e. between two stone walls. But the word "Enfer" refers more to the difficulties of working on this hill, with its vertiginous and very uneven slopes. Located in the heart of the Condrieu commune, Sainte Agathe's vineyards are so steep that they prevent any mechanized work in the vineyard. All work is therefore carried out by hand, and is all organic.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Les Condrieu de Vernay are earthy extras, so much so that they stand out from the crowd. Both in the expression of terroir and in the elegance of ageing. The Georges Vernay wine estate has some of the world's oldest Viognier vines on the Vernon hillsides. But the cuvée Les Chaillées de l'Enfer is not to be outdone: the vines are around 50 years old on average, and benefit from a location that favors optimal grape ripeness. The result is wines full of aromatic power and a mineral dimension almost unheard of from other winemakers. The wine estate's know-how is unique in the world.
On the nose, this Condrieu is impressive for its richness and balance between minerality, intense fruitiness and salinity. Notes of ripe apricot, pear, honey, a touch of sap and mango complete a work of art of immense finesse.
The palate is silky, caressing and sensual. The generosity of the Condrieu terroir gives the wine an allongevity that is simply sublime. The freshness that emerges is incomparable, and the minerality is so powerful that it could be mistaken for acidity. A great gastronomic wine that will arouse the taste buds of even the most discerning connoisseurs.
