La Grange des Pères 2022
There are a few wines that defy conventional classification. La Grange des Pères is one of them. Born on the hillsabove Aniane, inthe Hérault region, this legendary red embodies the vision of one man: Laurent Vaillé, who passed away in May 2021, and who trained under Coche-Dury, Gérard Chave, and Eloi Dürrbach. Three names that set the tone but fail to fully capture the talent of this brilliant artisan winemaker. Since then, his brother Bernard Vaillé has carried on this uncompromising style that has elevated the wine estate to the ranks of the great Languedoc wines. Produced in minuscule quantities, each vintage is a true rarity.
Terroir and Grape Varieties
The wine estate spans 11 hectares perched between 250 and 300 meters above sea level, facing due south, in a windswept mountain range where garrigue vegetation of white oaks and arbutus trees borders the vineyards. The subsoil—a layer of lacustrine limestone mixed with glacial debris—required blasting to make it arable and reveal the unsuspected potential of this exceptional terroir. These poor, well-drained soils force the roots to dig deep. This is the source of the wine’s characteristic limestone-driven tension.
The blend combines Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a touch of Counoise. It is precisely this last variety that precludes any AOC classification. The wine therefore bearsthe IGP Pays d’Hérault designation—a modest status for a bottle that rivals the great Languedoc wines. A deliberate paradox, almost a signature.
Viticulture and Winemaking
Cultivation practices reflect an almost monastic level of rigor: uncertified biodynamic farming, yields limited to between 20 and 22 hl/ha, and hand harvest at perfect ripeness. The grape varieties ferment separately, using indigenous yeasts, before blending. Ageing lasts 24 months in 228-liter barrels: long enough to integrate the flavors, yet subtle enough not to overpower them.
La Grange des Pères 2022: The Sommelier’s Opinion
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
This wine moves me with every vintage for the same reason: its quiet strength and precision imbue every tasting with an unforgettable aura. La Grange des Pères 2022 is one of the most accomplished reds from the Languedoc. Its peak drinking window extends from 2030 to 2042: there’s no need to rush. When young, it should be decanted for at least two hours at 17°C to allow the wine to fully open up. At the table, fine game and refined accompaniments will do it justice.
The Nose
The nose opens with ripe black fruits—cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry—carried by hints of garrigue and licorice. Notes of olive and graphite gradually emerge with aeration, evidence of two years of well-integrated ageing. In the background, the first hints of blond tobacco are detectable, promising an elegant tertiary evolution.
The Palate
On the palate, the attack is clean, smooth, and gentle. The wine gains body and reveals soft, refined, perfectly integrated tannins. Licorice, tapenade, and garrigue notes consistently extend the nose. A limestone-driven freshness runs through the long finish, balancing the wine’s Mediterranean richness. Nothing overpowers. That, precisely, is what makes it rare.
The Pays d’Hérault IGP: An Appellation of Freedom
The IGP Pays d’Hérault covers a vast area of the Languedoc, allowing for a diversity of grape varieties and blends that regional AOCs do not always permit. This flexible regulatory framework is sometimes perceived as a downgrade. Here, however, it is quite the opposite: a freedom that is both chosen and championed, serving a unique winemaking vision.
The Grange des Pères wine estate is located in Aniane, in the foothills of the Terrasses du Larzac, in what some consider one of the most promising terroirs in southern France. This 2022 vintage is the most eloquent illustration of this: a wine that far surpasses its administrative classification, rated 94 by Vinous, and which continues the legacy of an artisanal tradition that has now been passed on.
