Wine Description

The Cuvée Australe from the Roc des Anges wine estate is a plot-based cuvée resulting from a massal selection of Serine, a very old Syrah variety from Saint Joseph. The vines were planted when Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet arrived in 2001. Serine took 14 years to acclimatize and adapt to this terroir. So different from the Rhône Valley. Today, it's fair to say that it was one of the wisest choices the couple ever made, bringing this vineyard with them.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Australe is a cuvée that required a lot of hard work and soul-searching. Marjorie and Stéphane considered pulling it out several times because of its yield and results. But once fully acclimatized, this Serine reveals an extraordinary profile somewhere between a Cornas and a Saint Joseph, with an admirable freshness provided by the schist terroir.

On the nose, the wine develops notes of very fine pepper, with hints of plum, blackcurrant and blueberry. After a fine oxygenation, the wine reveals the lightly larded notes typical of the grape variety, as well as a very noble vegetal imprint.

Full-bodied on the palate, with satiny tannins. The Serine grape contributes a fantastic juice and greediness. This cuvée Australe can easily be compared to a fine Cornas, but more easily digested. The lingering finish is remarkable for its finesse and aromatic depth.
