Wine Description
Champagne Marguet 's cuvée Sapience Oenothèque 1er Cru is a meditative cuvée, at the pinnacle of the expertise of this emblematic Montagne de Reims wine estate. It draws its grapes from Premier Cru-certified terroirs, divided between Trépail for the Chardonnay (50%) and Cumières for the Pinot Meunier (25%). The rest of the blend, now a signature of the Sapience project, comprises 25% Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru terroir of Ambonnay. Driven by the committed vision of Benoît Marguet, this cuvée is cultivated according to biodynamic principles, ploughed with a horse, harvested by hand and vinified in oak barrels, without sulfur or yeast. This Brut Nature Champagne, cellared for ten years before disgorging, embodies a quest for purity and absolute verticality.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Sapience Oenothèque embodies the quintessential Marguet style in Brut Nature, between spectacular chalky tension and vibrant fruit energy. Its finesse and elegance place it unquestionably among Champagne's greatest cuvées, well ahead of its Premier Cru peers. Benoît Marguet has created a masterpiece of almost spiritual straightforwardness and precision.
On the nose, the evolution is immediately striking: ripe citrus fruits, candied lemon and blood orange, pure floral notes of lime blossom and chamomile, and a delicate woodiness evoking toasted almond that brings elegance and roundness. Chalky accents in the background recall the 1er Cru and Grand Cru terroirs from which this Champagne is made.
On the palate, the attack is lively and taut, carried by perfectly integrated vertical acidity. The mid-palate is rich but controlled, with flavors of candied lemon, ripe apple, discreet honey and dried herbs. Wood ageing lends a slightly creamy texture without weighing the wine down. The long, saline finish is characterized by refreshing minerality and lingering finesse.
The palate impresses with its chiseled tension, underpinned by vertical acidity that perfectly balances the ample body. The refinement of the bubbles carries in its persistence flavors of candied lemon, yellow apple, creamy honey and dried herbs. The transition to wood results in a texture that is both unctuous and light, with a touching delicacy. The finish stretches indefinitely on deliciously evolved notes, whose vibrant minerality beckons the next sip.
