The 2022 Le Trescols cuvée from Domaine Mas Jullien is a wine that varies from vintage to vintage and stands out as an exception for this particular vintage, as it is a 100% Pinot Noir grown in high-altitude terroirs where this Burgundian grape variety finds a rare and subtle expression under the southern sun. This cuvée embodies Olivier Jullien’s desire to push the stylistic boundaries of his region by offering a wine of remarkable finesse, grown under ideal conditions.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The grapes come from plots located at an altitude of over 400 meters, on poor, well-drained clay-limestone soils, with cool nights and sunny days. This unique microclimate, near the Buèges Valley, helps preserve a lovely freshness and prevents over-ripening. The ageing takes place for 16 months in Burgundy barrels that have previously held various wines, to respect the fruit’s natural expression.
On the nose, the wine immediately evokes the delicacy and purity of Pinot Noir: fresh raspberry, red currant, morello cherry, followed by very subtle floral nuances, somewhere between peony and faded rose. As it breathes, the wine reveals more complex notes of black tea, damp forest floor, musk, and a slightly smoky touch resulting from its subtle ageing.
On the palate, it captivates with its precision and balance. The attack is supple and light, with a velvety mouthfeel. The mid-palate gains density without ever becoming heavy: there is a framework of tart red fruits, accompanied by deeper notes of damp earth, sweet spices, and refreshing hints of mint. The tannins are exceptionally refined and powdery, seamlessly integrated into a firm yet elegant structure.
