Wine Description

Montcalmès’ Chardonnay is an exclusive, limited-production cuvée, unique within the wine estate’s portfolio. Made from young vines planted on limestone soils, it is hand-harvested, pressed immediately, and then aged for eighteen months in oak barrels before bottling. The wine estate spans 22 hectares, spread across Puéchabon, Aniane, Saint-Jean-de-Fos, and Saint-Saturnin-de-Lucian, and has been certified organic since 2015. Chardonnay remains an exception at Montcalmès, where Roussanne and Marsanne typically make up the wine estate’s white wine blend. Frédéric Pourtalié produces it only when vintage conditions are favorable.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Montcalmès’ Chardonnay is one of Frédéric Pourtalié’s most exclusive cuvées. Depending on the characteristics of the vintage, he produces this white wine in very limited quantities. It is a rare wine that one is eager to open whenever the occasion arises.

On the nose, green apple and candied lemon dominate, carried by a fresh structure that is subtly underscored by a woody note with hints of vanilla.

On the palate, the attack is round, supported by a lovely limestone minerality, leading to a finish with delicate toasted nuances. A rare Languedoc Chardonnay that you’re unlikely to come across more than once.
