The Tamdhu Distillery’s 12-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the most iconic expression from a distillery founded in 1897 in Knockando, in the heart of Banffshire, on the banks of the River Spey. Its uniqueness stems from a rigorous maturation philosophy: aging exclusively in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks—made from both American and European oak—without ever using bourbon casks, which otherwise dominate the Speyside single malt landscape. This single malt is the most compelling demonstration of that approach: a deep amber color with mahogany highlights, and an aromatic profile shaped by a decade of interaction between the Scotch malt and sherry-infused oak.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Tamdhu Distillery’s 12-Year-Old Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky offers one of the best value-for-money experiences in its category, thanks to its 100% sherry character, which lends it a seductive richness and roundness without ever becoming heavy.
The nose is rich and indulgent, opening with aromas of cinnamon brioche, candied orange, and raisins—a direct hallmark of aging in Oloroso casks. A light touch of fresh mint balances this generous profile, while soft, well-integrated oak adds depth to the whole, without ever masking the natural delicacy of the Speyside malt.
On the palate, the texture is silky and enveloping, carrying flavors of ripe banana, berry jam, and malted biscuit, intertwined with subtle notes of dark chocolate and toasted hazelnut. The long, well-balanced finish lingers with sweet spices, dried fruits, and a light touch of praline, before an imperceptible hint of smoke brings the tasting to a close with unexpected elegance.
