Long description

For several years now, this wine estate has been winning us over with its consistent production and excellent wines. EtienneLoew has found the key to fully embracing the nuances of the soils around Westhoffen , and defends this somewhat isolated vineyard like a guard watching over his rampart! His touch is sure, his thinking open, and his wines stand out for their elegance.

The soils are exceptional, the relief pronounced, the micro-climates legion, so the terroir is formidable.

Since 1996, Caroline and Etienne have been working hard to make their wines as authentic and refined as possible. The wine estate covers a wide range of grape varieties on very different terroirs, but always at very reasonable prices.

Wines that particularly appealed to us were the Pinot Gris Bruderbach, a dry, fresh wine with a radiant minerality, and the Sylvaner Westhoffen and Sylvaner Vérité, which restore the prestige of this all-too-frequently maligned grape variety. The Riesling Suessenberg and Riesling Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergbieten are uniquely precise and brilliant. A more expressive and profound approach to Riesling than what is regularly tasted in the Westhoffen area.

The sweet wines are simply exceptional in their balance, like theAuxerrois Botrytis , which reveals a luscious, fleshy mouthfeel with a beautiful exotic finish, or the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Altenberg, which brilliantly combines freshness and exoticism. For a little more complexity and residual sugar, Caroline and Etienne Loew produce sumptuous Vendanges Tardives (late harvest wines) in years when nature allows, such as the classic Gewurztraminer Vendange Tardive or the more audacious Riesling Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergbieten Vendange Tardive.

It's becoming less and less rare to find top-quality wines in Alsace , but it's still rare to find a range as coherent and consistent as that offered by the Loew couple. Their production remains on a human scale, with no more than 50,000 bottles produced, all of which have been produced biodynamically for a very long time. Etienne Loew promises many more surprises with the arrival of other cuvées in the near future.
