The Arretxea wine estate is located in the heart of the Basque Country. It is one of the most beautiful vineyards in France to explore. The steep slopes and terraced vineyards face the Pyrenees mountain range. The Riouspeyrous family settled in the magnificent town of Irouleguy, which gives its name to the appellation. Nearly 30 years ago, they set out to restore value and a strong identity to Irouleguy, which was still little known—if not even looked down upon—by wine enthusiasts.

It was during this period that the Arretxea wine estate set out to become the driving force behind the wines of southwestern France. It is the craft of the artisan winemaker that comes into its own here, highlighting the importance of respect for the terroir.

Year after year, the entire family works tirelessly to produce wines of great complexity. They study every nook and cranny of their unique terroir— which , it’s worth noting , is very ancient, as traces of the vineyard date back to the12th century.

Biodynamic vineyard management and the creation of micro-cuvées from specific plots have given their wines a strong identity. The Riouspeyrous family chose to produce these small-lot wines because the diversity of their terroir is incredibly rich. It was only natural for them to separate the grapes from vineyards on sandstone, schist, or ophit soils.

This approach has paid off, as their wines are now featured in the world’s finest establishments. Their sincere and principled work has left a lasting impression on many wine tasters.

All their wines are of impeccable quality, from the classic Irouleguy to the Haitza cuvée, including their extremely rare white wines.
