The Irouléguy Haitza is one of the signature wines of the Arretxea estate, nestled in the heart of the Basque Southwest. The Irouléguy appellation, wedged between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Spanish border, remains one of the least well-known in France. In Basque, “Haitza” means “oak,” a tree that symbolizes strength and longevity—qualities that perfectly reflect the character and aging potential of this cuvée.
The vines grow on red sandstone soils, rich in iron and well-drained, which promote deep root growth and give the wine beautiful concentration. The blend consists of 90% Tannat and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Tannat provides structure and power, while the Cabernet Franc adds freshness and floral notes. Together, they offer a harmonious balance that allows the character of the terroir to fully express itself.
The Arretxea estate cultivates its vineyards using biodynamic methods, without official certification, but with a genuine commitment to respecting the soil and the terroir. The grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentation and maceration take place in concrete tanks to preserve the fruit’s aromas and the wine’s minerality. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barrels, which softens the Tannat’s tannins while preserving its character.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
Once known for its powerful tannins and austere character, the Tannat reveals a more approachable side here. At Arretxea, the concrete tanks preserve the wine’s freshness, while the 18 months in oak barrels soften the tannins without diminishing the wine’s character. The result is generous and balanced, with a velvety texture and lovely precision. This wine can be enjoyed right now, after an hour of decanting to fully reveal its aromas, but it will also age well in the cellar and be enjoyable in a few years. An Irouléguy that combines power and elegance, inspiring a desire to explore this Pyrenean appellation further. I recommend serving it at 16°C in attractive glasses.
The Nose
The nose opens with ripe black fruits—wild blackberry and blackcurrant—with a hint of candied plum. A subtle note of violet adds freshness, while a discreet minerality evokes red sandstone and the character of the terroir.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is generous and well-structured, with a dense, velvety texture that’s never heavy. The Tannat’s tannins are clearly present but softened by barrel aging. A lovely mineral freshness provides balance, while the long, harmonious finish leaves a pleasant, lingering fruitiness.
The Irouléguy AOP appellation is one of the smallest and most distinctive in southwestern France. It stretches across the steep hillsides of the inland Basque Country, around the villages of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. The red sandstone and granitic sandy soils, combined with often steep slopes, produce wines with a distinct character. The dominant grape variety is Tannat, often blended with Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon for the reds.
With L’Haitza 2022, the Arretxea estate offers a beautiful expression of the Irouléguy terroir. Biodynamic vineyard management, vinification in concrete tanks, and aging in oak barrels result in a balanced wine that combines power and finesse. A wonderful discovery from the Basque wine region, one that deserves to be known far beyond the Pyrenees.
