Wine Description
Domaine Bernard Gripa 's cuvée Saint-Joseph blanc "Le Berceau " is an exceptional wine, made from old Marsanne vines planted in 1920 on the hillside of Tournon. These almost century-old vines, rooted in deep micaschist soils, give the wine remarkable complexity and aromatic richness. The plots dedicated to "Le Berceau" are located on steep hillsides, making mechanization impossible. As a result, the vines are tended and harvested by hand, ensuring that each vine receives the utmost attention.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: After hand harvesting, the grapes undergo a slow, delicate pressing. The must is then lightly settled before fermenting in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and oak barrels. Ageing takes place on fine lees for 10 to 12 months, with stirring, divided between demi-muids (50%), oak barrels (30%) and aluminum vats (20%).
The first nose opens with a delicate aromatic complexity, blending elegant floral and fruity notes. Aromas of white flowers (hawthorn, honeysuckle, lime blossom) are accompanied by hints ofzesty citrus (preserved lemon, blood orange) and Granny Smith apple.
The attack is full and silky, revealing a generous body and a velvety texture that coats the palate. The balance between fat and tension is perfectly controlled, offering a sensation of volume without heaviness. Fruity aromas explode on the palate: Williams pear, juicy white peach, mirabelle plum and an exotic touch of fresh mango. As the tasting progresses, the wine's minerality comes to the fore, with a saline framework and a fine bitterness oflemon peel providing structure. The finish is remarkably long, carried by chalky notes, a touch ofsweet spices (coriander, star anise) and a subtle hint of roasted hazelnut.
