Wine Description
On the limestone hillsides of the Putiers sector, where granite outcrops structure the limestone soils characteristic of the appellation, Domaine Bernard Gripa 's Saint-Péray Les Figuiers is a model of balance and tension. On this substrate of white limestone and weathered granite, the blend of Roussanne and Marsanne, typical of the Northern Rhône Valley, achieves a fleshier, spicier dimension than other cuvées in the sector. Domaine Bernard Gripa 's careful viticulture and hand harvesting preserve the integrity and optimum ripeness of the grapes. After slow pressing and light settling, natural fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. Subsequent ageing on fine lees takes place in experienced oak barrels for around a year, giving the cuvée an impressive smoothness and balance.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine Bernard Gripa 's Saint Péray Les Figuiers is one of the greatest wines of its appellation. Ageing on lees delivers a superb score of roundness, density and mineral tension. A great representative of the white wines of the Northern Rhône Valley.
On the nose, the wine develops a profusion of white flowers, with hints of white nectarine, roasted pineapple and roasted almonds. The ripeness of the juice allows a remarkable evolution in the glass, where notes of acacia honey, white pepper and mild curry are expressed with frankness.
On the palate, this Saint Péray Les Figuiers is tasty and fleshy, driven by dynamic, fresh acidity. Juicy flavors of white fruit and ripe exotic fruit combine with the peppery varietal of Roussanne with beautiful harmony. The complexity of white flowers and toasted dried fruits accompanies the fine minerality of the finish, whose fine bitters linger pleasantly.
