Michel Bouzereau et Fils ' Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains originates on the upper slopes of Puligny Montrachet, Burgundy. The Les Champs Gains climat forms a natural balcony behind Montrachet, where the altitude, southeasterly exposure and particularly draining clay-limestone gravel soils give Chardonnay both freshness and brilliance. The small 0.43-hectare parcel is cultivated by Domaine Michel Bouzereau et Fils with the same rigor as Meursault crus. Working the soil, deliberately limiting yields and patient winemaking reflect the quest for balance so dear to Jean Baptiste Bouzereau. After natural fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in barrels, a quarter of which are new, and then matured for 3 months in vats.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : This Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gains is a jewel by Jean Baptiste Bouzereau. Its tension, depth and sensuality make us look to the Grands Crus of Montrachet, so much so that this wine outclasses its rank. A rare gems!
The nose opens with a delicate, complex framework of acacia, hawthorn, lime blossom, citrus pulp and ripe white fruit. The abundant minerality of the limestone terroir mingles with the richness of evolved aromas reminiscent of dried fruit and toasted bread.
On the palate, the wine's acidic structure perfectly balances the fatness of the material. The silky texture gains in tension and verticality throughout the tasting, offering rich, complex flavors of candied citrus, white fruit and honey a saline, delicately spicy counterpoint. The finish stretches on endlessly, with a Grand Cru-like flinty mineral persistence.
