Marquis d'Angerville 's Meursault 1er Cru Santenots is one of the Burgundy wines you must taste in your lifetime. On the northern edge of Meursault, along the Volnay finage, the wines produced in this exceptional climate can bear the name Meursault or Volnay , depending on the grape variety. Domaine Marquis d'Angerville has owned a small parcel of just over one hectare here since 1905. At that time, Sem d'Angerville wanted to make a white Premier Cru, so he chose to exploit a parcel of this terroir, historically famous for its reds, and which is today one of the singularities of the family vineyard. If the wine estate is a worldwide ambassador for Volnay, it is here that he has produced an exceptional Chardonnay . The limestone-rich marl soils imbue the grape with a distinctive mineral influence, while the south-east exposure and moderate slope provide ideal conditions for old vines to flourish.

The wine estate's conversion to biodynamic viticulture in 2009 has resulted in limited manual labor, exclusively natural treatments to encourage the vines' full development, and strict respect for natural cycles. The grapes are hand-picked to retain only the finest bunches, which are then completely destemmed. Fermentation is carried out by the indigenous yeasts present on the berries, before a complete malolactic fermentation. The musts are then pressed and gravity-fed into oak barrels, 20% of which are new. The wine spends around 18 months in these barrels, refining its texture and balance.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Domaine Marquis d'Angerville 's Meursault Premier Cru Santenots is an absolute rarity, almost a geographical anomaly, and a delight for lovers of great Côte de Beaune whites. The iron-oxide and clay-rich soils are so favorable to Pinot Noir that many of the wines produced here are sold under the Volnay-Santenots appellation. However, a very small portion of this terroir is dedicated to Chardonnay, producing wines of masterful power and opulence. Under Guillaume d'Angerville's guidance, this Meursault becomes a model of mineral tension, far removed from buttery Murisaltian clichés. This Meursault 1er Cru Santenots de Marquis d'Angerville is one of those great gastronomic wines, made to stand the test of time.

The nose is noble, intense and of great purity. It moves away from toasted reduction notes to offer a fresh bouquet of crisp pear, vine peach and yellow lemon peel. The complexity of the bouquet is revealed by a subtle combination of white flowers and mineral aromas reminiscent of gunflint. Discreet ageing adds a fine texture of fresh hazelnut and brioche, without any hint of acidity

The palate reveals a wine of volume and energy, whose broad, ripe body is immediately animated by vibrant acidity, giving the profile an athletic, streamlined allure. The juicy flavors of fresh fruit are accompanied by a lacy salinity and subtle hints of brioche. The salivating finish lingers with the imprint of the Santenots terroir, between lemon zest and damp chalk.
