Description: Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cras Long 2024 | Domaine François Lumpp

The Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cras Long from Domaine François Lumpp is one of the most obscure red wines in southern Burgundy. The vineyard plot covers no more than 0.64 hectares, nestled east of Givry and facing the rising sun. It’s a small area. But that small amount is enough for François Lumpp to craft a wine of remarkable precision, vintage after vintage. The Clos du Cras Long belongs to that category of climats that don’t need a flashy reputation: they speak for themselves in the glass.

Terroir and Grape Variety

The hillside rests on a base of limestone mixed with fine marl, typical of the slopes of the Côte Chalonnaise. This well-drained soil, which is both poor and structuring, forces the Pinot Noir roots to dig deep. The result is natural concentration, achieved without artificial intervention. The vineyard faces east: it captures the morning cool, which preserves the wine’s tension and mineral energy. Pinot Noir is in its element here: a limestone terroir that shapes its integrity, and an exposure that preserves its liveliness.

Viticulture and Winemaking

The estate manages its vineyards according to consistent principles: sustainable soil management, weed control, and respect for natural rhythms. The grapes are harvested by hand and then meticulously sorted on a sorting table. Winemaking begins with cold maceration, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless-steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in barrels, 70% of which are new oak. This choice is deliberate: it adds body and depth without overshadowing the expression of the terroir. The winemaking approach remains understated, serving the terroir.

Givry 1er Cru Clos du Cras Long 2024 | Domaine François Lumpp: The Sommelier’s Review

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

This wine bears François Lumpp’s signature with disarming clarity. We find the balance that characterizes the estate: density and verticality, body and freshness, without one overpowering the other. Within the Givry appellation, few 1er Crus achieve this level of precision in expression with less than one hectare of production. The ideal drinking window is between 2029 and 2035, by which time the tannins will have fully integrated and the limestone terroir will express itself in all its complexity. Decanting for one hour is recommended if you give in to the temptation to open it earlier. Serve at 16°C.

The nose

The nose opens with ripe red and black fruits, with morello cherry and wild blackberry leading the way. Notes of subtle spices and licorice add depth to the bouquet. A hint of dried flowers—peony and slightly wilted rose—brings delicacy. In the background, a faint smoky note reveals the mineral character of the limestone. The profile is intense without being heavy.

The Palate

On the palate, the attack is full-bodied and rich. The wine unfolds generously, supported by fine, already well-integrated tannins. The acidity maintains balance throughout the tasting. The intensity of the spices and the suppleness of the fruit complement each other without one overpowering the other. The finish, persistent and mineral, leaves an impression of integrity characteristic of Clos du Cras Long.

Givry: Everything You Need to Know About This Appellation

Givry is one of the four municipal appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy. Its vineyards stretch across the municipalities of Givry, Jambles, and Dracy-le-Fort, on limestone hillsides facing east and southeast. The appellation primarily produces red wines made from Pinot Noir, renowned for their finesse and aging potential. Premiers Crus account for a significant portion of production here, with “climats” that each possess distinct characteristics.

Le Clos du Cras Long exemplifies what Givry can produce at its very best: a precise red wine, rooted in a lesser-known limestone terroir, crafted by a winemaker who refuses to compromise. Within the appellation’s landscape, this climat stands out for its small size and the consistent quality that François Lumpp ensures. It is a solid choice for those seeking a Givry Premier Cru with character—one that is both approachable in its youth and promising over the long term.
