Domaine de Vaccelli’s 2023 red Granit is one of the most distinctive expressions of Corsican wine. This single-vineyard cuvée comes from the heart of the Ajaccio appellation, in the Taravo Valley. It is crafted from a selection of old Sciaccarellu vines—the island’s flagship grape variety—which have been cultivated here for decades on an exceptional terroir.
The soil makes all the difference. The granite-rich soils of the Taravo Valley shape this wine with a precision that no recipe could ever replicate. This weathered granite, both well-draining and nutrient-poor, forces the old vines to root deeply. The result is a deep minerality that cuts through the wine’s density and concentration with every sip. The Mediterranean climate, tempered by altitude and sea mist, brings out generous fruit whose natural freshness is perfectly preserved. The balance is perfect.
The wine estate cultivates its vines using certified organic farming methods (Ecocert). The grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot. Winemaking follows a minimalist approach: fermentation with native yeasts, measured extraction, followed by 12 months of ageing in large vats and demi-muids. This choice of large containers preserves the fruit and allows the terroir to express itself without intrusive oak. A wine built on patience.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
Sciaccarellu is a deceptive grape variety. It easily gives the impression of lightness, then reveals unexpected depth. Vaccelli’s Granit red 2023 illustrates this perfectly. The acid structure is precise, the tannins are fine yet present, and the granitic terroir leaves its mark on every finish. This wine will reach its peak drinking period between 2029 and 2036, but it’s already worth decanting for 30 minutes to an hour to fully open up at 17°C. A rare island red that holds its own against the great continental cuvées of similar ambition.
The Nose
The nose opens with wild blueberries and morello cherries—intense, distinct fruits. The Corsican maquis is also present: thyme, wild herbs, and a fresh, characteristic vegetal touch. Empyreumatic notes of light smoke and leather emerge in the background, reflecting the maturity of the vines and the wine’s ageing potential. Granite is discernible in the background—warm and subtle.
On the palate
On the palate, the attack is clean and full-bodied. The texture is ample and fleshy, supported by balancing acidity that adds tension without making the wine harsh. The tannins are delicate, almost silky, and bring out the ripe red fruits and slightly stewed black berries. The retro-olfaction reveals sweet spices, potpourri, and a lingering hint of wild herbs. The finish builds in intensity—spicy and long—with a mineral aftertaste that recalls the wine’s granite origins.
The Ajaccio appellation spans the west coast of Corsica, between the sea and the mountains. The soils here are predominantly granitic, well-drained, and nutrient-poor, which naturally limits yields and concentrates the wine’s aromatic expression. The iconic grape variety is Sciaccarellu, used almost exclusively for the appellation’s reds. It produces wines that are both refined and structured, with a spicy character and a mineral freshness that few other Mediterranean grape varieties can claim. The appellation remains relatively exclusive on a national scale, which lends it an added sense of rarity.
Vaccelli’s 2023 red Granit is fully representative of what Ajaccio can produce at its very best. The plot-selective harvest from old vines, meticulous ageing, and organic certification make it a benchmark cuvée within the appellation. For anyone seeking to understand Sciaccarellu in all its complexity, this wine is an ideal starting point.
