Wine Description
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru La Richemone from Domaine des Lambrays marks the spectacular debut of this historic Morey-Saint-Denis estate in the neighboring appellation, with a cuvée whose nobility is immediately apparent. The La Richemone vineyard, located on the northern edge of Nuits-Saint-Georges, bordering the terroirs of Vosne-Romanée, is one of the great underrated vineyards of the Côte de Nuits: on this plot of less than one hectare, the wine estate cultivates vines, some of which date back to 1924—a century of deep roots in clay-limestone soils that concentrate and add complexity to the fruit with rare depth. The entire plot is cultivated using certified organic farming methods, with very low yields achieved through rigorous green harvesting, meticulous hand harvest, and winemaking that includes a portion of whole clusters—all in keeping with the rigorous approach of Jacques Devauges, the wine estate’s director since 2019.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru La Richemone from Domaine des Lambrays embodies an underrated, century-old vineyard, tended by one of the most exacting wine estates on the Côte, at a price point that remains reasonable given the terroir’s intrinsic quality. It represents a rare marriage of the delicacy of the neighboring Vosne wines and the typical structure of Nuits, magnified by uncompromising expertise.
The nose opens elegantly with an airy, floral bouquet, blending faded rose petals, fresh red berries, and a subtle hint of smoke. As it breathes, notes of damp stone and forest floor gradually unfold, revealing a complexity that is already well-defined—a sign of the exceptional potential of these century-old vines on this exceptional terroir.
On the palate, the texture is both round and taut, with remarkable balance, permeated by a minerality that precisely infuses the red fruit. Spicy and peppery notes assert themselves with character, enhanced by a subtle hint of fresh chocolate in the background, while a long, briny, and lingering finish concludes the tasting with an impression of great nobility and Burgundian depth.
