Wine Description

Winemaker Antoine Sanzay'sSaumur Champigny Les Poyeux is one of the finest wines currently available in this appellation. A neighbor of the famous Clos Rougeard, it offers exceptional ageing potential. It also stands out for its fine tannins and delicious body. Its character is essentially due to its south-facing terroir, but also to meticulous winemaking and ageing over 18 months in barrel. The result is a bluffing wine, with a remarkable balance between power and finesse.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Cabernet Franc is a difficult grape variety that demands rigor and precision. Antoine Sanzay has succeeded perfectly in taming its sometimes rustic and vegetal character. His Saumur Champigny is in a class of its own, and in my opinion belongs in the upper echelons of French wine. The Poyeux terroir helps a lot, but so does the drastic work carried out on the old vines, which has produced a wine of great beauty.

On the nose, the wine develops very intense, fruity and spicy notes. The nose profile is not at all similar to a "classic" Cabernet Franc. It's more delicate, with no hint of herbs.

The tannins are still a little hard, but will mellow over time. This is clearly a wine for laying down, which will reveal itself magnificently over time. A superb achievement from this talented and passionate young winemaker whom we are following very closely.
