Maxime Magnon’s Cuvée Rose red Corbières is the wine estate’s most exclusive and prized cuvée: created in honor of his daughter, it is produced only in years when the winemaker deems it worthy of the name. Sourced from a plot of century-old Cinsault vines cultivated biodynamically in the heart of the Hautes-Corbières, at an elevation of 200 meters, on schist and clay-limestone soils, it is vinified through whole-cluster maceration at low temperatures. While the wine estates’ other cuvées charm with their immediacy, Rose demands time and patience: it is Maxime Magnon’s wine for aging, the one that reveals the full depth of a terroir tailor-made for complexity.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Maxime Magnon ’s red Corbières cuvée is undeniably the wine estate’s flagship wine, and it is also the most understated—one that does not reveal itself immediately. The century-old Cinsault expresses itself here in a pure and profound way, far removed from the immediate fruitiness for which it is usually known. It is a top-tier wine, built for aging, that opens up beautifully after decanting but will benefit even more from aging for several more years in the cellar.
The color is brilliant, with purple highlights, surprisingly light for a red of such depth. The nose reveals ripe red and black fruits, spices, and peony; a bouquet that is at once elegant and wild, airy and spicy, reflecting the Cinsault’s tremendous potential on this high-altitude terroir.
The palate is pure, vibrant, and deep, dominated by black fruits, with a remarkable balance between power and elegance. The texture is silky, the finish superb and highly complex: this is a spicy, deep red that lingers with a persistent and refined finish.
