Graeme and Julie Bott 's Kamaka Viognier Terroir de Seyssuel is the wine estate's second cuvée from this exceptional terroir. Facing the dizzying slopes of Côte Rôtie, the little-known terroir of Seyssuel extends its centuries-old vineyards, dating back to Roman times, whose rich history and renown were somewhat erased by the phylloxera epidemic in the early 20th century. On these soils of gneiss and micaschist, Domaine Bott acquired several plots of Syrah and Viognier in 2016, and have since been working to ensure that the Seyssuel terroir achieves full PDO recognition within the Northern Rhône appellations. The Viognier vines planted in 2017 on this parcel of land, which has been badly damaged by climatic incidents, draw minerals from the particularly hard soil, the minerality of which can be found in the berries, harvested by hand and vinified with care. Ageing takes place over nine months in French oak barrels, bringing complexity and structure to the wine.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : The magnificent Kamaka Viognier Terroir de Seyssuel cuvée, the white twin of Kamaka Syrah, named in Maori "Jus de cailloux" in reference to Graeme's New Zealand origins, should have been born as early as 2019, but the vagaries of the weather have postponed the first Viognier harvest until 2022. Graeme and Julie Bott 's patience - and ours - has been amply rewarded by the unique profile of this cuvée. Domaine Bott has preserved the identity of this terroir by delivering a straightforward, mineral and very pure Viognier.
The nose opens with exquisite finesse, far from the exuberance typical of this grape variety. Here, the expression is pure, airy and subtly floral, evoking a bouquet of white flowers mingling violet, orange blossom and hints of lavender. As the wine opens, notes of juicy white peach and fresh apricot appear, interspersed with accents of crystalline minerality.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, with a mineral tension that is surprising for a Viognier, and that balances out the tasting. A sensation of caressing roundness gradually unfolds on the palate, cradled by the fruity and floral flavors of the nose. The finish stands out for its mineral, upright character, whose persistence is the hallmark of a great Rhône wine, elegant and resolutely gastronomic.
