Wine Description
Les Grands Chemins from Roucas Toumba is Éric Bouletin’s most free-spirited cuvée, a Vin de France that breaks free from appellations to better express its terroir. The blend consists of 50% Grenache, 40% old Carignan, and 10% Syrah, sourced from the lower slopes with clay-loam soil and a plot on sandy sandstone. What sets this cuvée apart is that it is blended entirely at harvest, so that each grape variety contributes to the whole from the very beginning, without any calculations or adjustments. Roucas Toumba, meaning “fallen rock” in Old Provençal, is a small family-owned estate in Vacqueyras that has been farmed organically since its earliest years.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: Les Grands Chemins de Roucas Toumba is a wine without pretense or artifice, where the fruit is expressed in its purest form. The old Carignan brings a liveliness and natural acidity that few southern grape varieties can claim; it is this that gives the wine its unique character.
On the nose, powerful notes of forest floor, white pepper, and a hint of chocolate unfold in a profile that is both dark and fruity. Aromas of ripe black fruits, garrigue, and a slight hint of licorice bear the hallmark of the old Carignan.
The palate is full-bodied and well-structured, supported by a lovely natural freshness. The tannins are present but not harsh, and the finish is clean and direct.
