Whisky Kadhambam Amrut Distilleries

Whisky Kadhambam Amrut Distilleries | Spirits

Kadhambam, the Tamil word for “blend,” says it all about this Indian single malt from Amrut: Matured successively in ex-bourbon, ex-rum, ex-Oloroso sherry, and ex-brandy casks, it offers an oily texture, candied fruits, a hint of peat, and a long, spicy finish. A selection that showcases the most consistent and unexpected qualities this Indian whiskey has to offer.

Kadhambam | Amrut

Kadhambam is one of the most unique creations from Amrut Distilleries, a distillery located in Bangalore (Bengaluru), in the heart of southern India. Its name comes from Tamil: “kadhambam” means “blend” or “combination.” This word was not chosen at random. It perfectly captures the essence of this whiskey: the art of blending elevated to a rare level of complexity. Initially launched as an exclusive edition for Hyderabad Duty Free, it quickly transcended that exclusive market to establish itself as one of the world’s leading Indian single malts.

Raw Materials and Terroir

The barley used for this single malt comes from northwestern India, a region with agricultural conditions very different from those of the Scottish Highlands. The distillery itself operates in a tropical savanna climate. This detail is significant: the heat accelerates the exchange between the distillate and the wood, intensifying the extraction of aromas at a rate unseen in temperate Europe. The result is a denser, more concentrated spirit.

Winemaking and Ageing

Amrut Distilleries was the first Indian distillery to export a single malt produced according to the standards of the Scotch Whisky Association. For Kadhambam, the ageing method is at the heart of it all. The whiskey ages successively in four distinct types of casks: ex-bourbon, ex-rum (from Amrut’s own production), ex-Oloroso sherry, and ex-brandy. The whiskies developed in this way—some of which are peated—are then blended in refill bourbon casks for a final period of integration. Each cask contributes a specific aromatic layer. Oloroso sherry imparts dark fruit and roundness. Rum adds a warm sweetness. Brandy refines the flavor. Bourbon provides structure and vanilla notes. The final blend harmonizes these layers into a cohesive profile.

Kadhambam | Amrut: The Sommelier’s Take

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

This whiskey surprised me, and that doesn’t happen very often. The four-stage maturation could have produced a muddled, disjointed profile. Instead, it achieves the opposite: remarkable, almost paradoxical coherence. Kadhambam demonstrates that complexity isn’t the enemy of clarity, provided each cask is selected with a specific intention. I’d serve it at around 18–20°C, without ice, in a tulip glass that concentrates the aromas. A drop of room-temperature water can open it up even more. This is a whiskey to drink now, in full, without waiting.

The Nose

The nose opens with rich, dark notes of candied cherry and Christmas pudding. Behind these, tropical fruits and citrus bring a touch of lightness. Honey and vanilla form the foundation, supported by a subtle oak framework. A hint of toasted hazelnut rounds out the profile without weighing it down.

Palate

On the palate, the attack is clean: candied fruits, well-integrated spices, and a slight hint of peat in the background. The texture is oily, smooth, and almost enveloping. The oak comes through in moderation, without overpowering the other flavors. The finish is long, dry, and warm, with lingering notes of spices and wood.
