Blanton's Original Single Barrel is not just another whiskey or bourbon. It is a historic landmark. Introduced in 1984 by Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee, it was the world's first commercially available "single barrel" bourbon. The idea stemmed from an even older practice: Colonel Albert B. Blanton, president of the distillery for decades, personally selected exceptional barrels for his guests. Lee simply made this tradition accessible to everyone. This groundbreaking move redefined an entire category.

Blanton’s is produced at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Each bottle is hand-bottled and topped with a collectible cap featuring a horse and its jockey—one of eight designs that spell out “B-L-A-N-T-O-N-S.”

Warehouse H and the selection of barrels

It all happens inWarehouse H. It is the only metal-clad warehouse at Buffalo Trace. This detail makes all the difference: temperature fluctuations are amplified there, which accelerates the interaction between the bourbon and the wood. The result is a more intense, more expressive aging process. The selected barrels come from the middle sections of this warehouse, where conditions are considered optimal.

The blend is based on a mash of corn, rye, and malted barley, with corn accounting for at least 51% of the composition, in accordance with Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey requirements. This regulatory framework also mandates the exclusive use of new, charred American oak barrels. Aging generally lasts between 6 and 8 years, with the final selection being a matter of taste, not a set timeline.

Winemaking and Bottling

Each bottle comes from a single barrel and is never blended. This is the very essence of single barrel: each batch is unique, as evidenced by the barrel number printed on the label. Bottling is done by hand. No standardization through blending smooths out the profile. What’s in the bottle is exactly what that particular barrel produced, in that particular warehouse, during those particular years.

This bourbon has created its own category. Forty years after its creation, it remains the gold standard. Recent accolades confirm this: World’s Best Single Barrel Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards. What interests me most, however, is the consistency of the concept: a single barrel, a single warehouse, and a selection philosophy that has remained unchanged since 1984. Unlike wine, bourbon does not continue to evolve in the bottle; what you open today is what the wood has crafted over those years of aging. Blanton’s Original is a bourbon of precision as much as of pleasure—a rare combination in this price range. Serve it slightly chilled, around 18 °C, with or without a single ice cube to release the aromas.

The Nose

The nose opens with notes of dried vanilla and buttered caramel, carried by the sweetness of ripe corn. Next come subtle baking spices—cinnamon and cloves—which add structure without weighing the wine down. A hint of orange zest and a few notes of honey round out the profile. The oak lingers in the background, present but restrained.

The palate

On the palate, the attack is rich and enveloping, with a creamy texture that immediately establishes the body. Rye brings a distinct spiciness to the mid-palate, which contrasts pleasantly with the melt-in-the-mouth quality of the corn. The balance between sweetness and spicy tension is precise. The finish lingers on notes of caramel, dry oak, and a hint of pepper, with a gentle warmth that prolongs the experience without being overpowering.
