Fusion | Amrut

Amrut's Fusion is one of the most celebrated Indian single malts of the past two decades. The Amrut distillery, founded in 1948 in Bangalore, operated largely behind the scenes for many years before making its mark on the global stage. Its name comes from Sanskrit and means “elixir of life.” It’s a promise that Fusion delivers on, in its own way.

The cuvée owes its name to its founding principle: the blending of two origins, two characters, two worlds. 75% unpeated Indian barley, grown in Punjab, with its harsh winters and scorching summers. 25% peated barley imported from Scotland, which brings smokiness, depth, and a taste of the Highlands. This dialogue between the two grains is the key to it all.

The barley from the Punjab grows in an extreme, contrasting climate. This hot-cold contrast enriches the grain with nutrients and shapes a dense, expressive raw material. The water used during distillation comes from theHimalayan mountains. Two geographical regions merge within a single still.

Aging lasts about 4.5 years, in used bourbon barrels and new oak barrels. But duration isn’t the whole story. In Bangalore, the tropical climate accelerates the exchange between the distillate and the wood: maturation there is three to four times faster than in Scotland. What the Highlands achieve in fifteen years, Amrut achieves in less than five. It’s not a shortcut: it’s a different kind of alchemy, unique to the subcontinent.

Fusion | Amrut: The Sommelier’s Take

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin

Fusion has changed the way connoisseurs view Indian whiskey. In 2009, Jim Murray awarded it 97 points in his *Whisky Bible*, ranking it the third-best whiskey in the world. Two years later, the World Whisky Awards named it “World’s Best Single Malt.” These accolades are no small feat: they’ve made a breakthrough in a world dominated by Scotland and Japan. What stands out most to me is the balance. The peat is present but never overpowering. The fruit and wood hold their own without overshadowing one another. A single malt that proves great distillation isn’t limited to just a few regions.

The Nose

The nose opens with a warm and generous character. Notes of butter caramel, candied orange zest, and vanilla unfold first. Then comes a touch of soft, discreet peat—almost smoky from a distance. Milk chocolate and toasted almond round out the profile with a smooth, rounded character. Nothing harsh: it’s an inviting nose.

The Palate

On the palate, the attack is surprisingly smooth for a spirit at 50% ABV. The texture is full-bodied, silky, and complex. Candied fruit and molasses take center stage, carried by a subtle smoky note in the mid-palate. The balance between Indian grain and Scottish peat holds through to the finish. The finish is long, with notes of honeyed bread, vanilla, and a lingering hint of peat.

Benriach Cask Edition 2009, a Speyside single malt aged for 12 years in a single Port Pipe cask, reveals a nose of smoked bacon, fresh strawberries, and candied orange, followed by a fruity, smoky palate with notes of cashews and quince jelly. A rare, non-chill-filtered expression that Mundovin selected for the intensity of its character.
