Wine Description

Domaine Combier 's Cap Nord red Crozes-Hermitage is born on the highest slopes of the northern Rhône Valley, at the northernmost point of the appellation. The Syrah vines, planted almost 50 years ago, stretch from 300 to 450 meters above sea level, on naturally draining soils of loess and decomposed granite. This combination of altitude, poor soils and multiple exposures imbues this plot selection with progressive maturity and great aromatic purity. The Domaine Combier, which has long been committed to organic viticulture, uses hand harvesting with selective sorting to preserve the integrity of the berries and their best level of ripeness. Natural fermentation is followed by 12 months' ageing in experienced barrels, then a further 12 months in bottle in the wine estate's own cellars.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Laurent Combier 's Crozes Hermitage rouge Cap Nord is at the crossroads of northern power and high-altitude freshness. The choice of plots, all located to the north of the appellation, gives the wine an identity that is more taut than sunny. Its vertical structure and formidable energy reflect the freshness of altitude and the concentration typical of the old vines of the Northern Rhône. This fresh, assertive wine has ageing potential of a decade or more, but also offers immediate pleasure.

On the nose, Crozes Hermitage Cap Nord immediately reveals a ripe, pure bouquet dominated by blackcurrant, blueberry and blackberry. Notes of violet refine the profile, while an almost Mediterranean register of cedar, clove and Timut pepper gradually emerges.

The palate is incredibly silky, driven by the vertical energy and freshness of the Northern Rhône hillsides. The fine grain of tannin melts into the lightly camphorated flavors of black berries and fine spices. As the wine evolves in the glass, it reveals hints of balsamic that linger elegantly on the delicate finish. Remarkable balance!
