Domaine Combier 's Cap Nord red Saint-Joseph is grown at an altitude of almost 300 metres, on a north-facing slope overlooking Tournon-sur-Rhône. In this northernmost sector, the natural coolness of the climate and altitude slows down the ripening of the Syrah vines. Rooted in hard soils of pure, stony granite, a parent rock that gives the wine a unique tension and verticality, the grape achieves remarkable complexity here. The very name of this Saint Joseph Cap Nord aptly describes the singular profile of this cuvée, which perfectly embodies the granite identity of the Northern Rhône. As usual, Domaine Combier hand harvests its plots and winemakes its grapes naturally, with fermentation led by the indigenous yeasts present on the berries. The ensuing ageing in experienced barrels lasts 12 months, and aims to preserve the expression of the fruit and the verticality of the terroir. Annual production of this micro-cuvée, one of only two Saint Josephs produced by Domaine Combier, does not exceed 2,000 bottles. A true rarity!
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : If the Combier family is world-renowned for having lifted Crozes Hermitage to the top, it is here that they sign a surgically precise red Saint Joseph that redefines the appellation's standards. It has the straightforward feel of the great granitic terroirs of the Northern Rhône Valley, with an added minerality rare in Syrah. While its northern freshness makes it a haute couture wine, the crystalline elegance of the material will also enable it to evolve over time towards greater suavity, without losing its identity.
The nose is fascinatingly pure and brilliant. It opens with fresh aromas of red and black berries, and intense notes of black pepper and fresh violets. After opening, complexity sets in with hints of licorice and camphor, intermingled with smoky, finely larded aromas. The granite signature comes through with a hint of graphite and gunflint, adding a racy dimension.
On the palate, the wine surprises with its structuring verticality and slender body. This Saint Joseph Cap Nord plays the card of precision, far from the image of fleshy wines often associated with the appellation. The attack is frank, carried by a remarkable mineral energy. The extremely fine tannins are integrated into a slender, juicy body. The finish plays the card of saline freshness and floral persistence, leaving a sensation of absolute purity on the palate. This is a gastronomic wine par excellence.
