Wine Description

To the north of Puligny-Montrachet, the Les Chalumeaux climat enjoys a slightly higher altitude than the appellation's other 1er crus, and excellent east/south-east exposure. On this well-drained soil, rich in limestone and marl, the 30-year-old Chardonnay vines produce wines with a straight, taut, finely structured profile. This Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru Les Chalumeaux from Domaine Thierry et Pascale Matrot is marked by the morning freshness of the hilltop and the beautiful ripeness of the Chardonnay berries.

Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: This 1er cru Les Chalumeaux from Domaine Matrot ticks all the boxes of a great Puligny-Montrachet. With its dazzling energy, floral and stony accents, it expresses a precise, crystalline palate. And that mineral tension that makes you salivate... This is a gastronomic wine that perfectly combines vivacity and generosity. It will find its place on the table in 8 to 15 years to reveal all its complexity. For those who can't resist the temptation to open it now, it should be decanted for at least an hour when young.

The nose is opulent without being excessive, dominated by notes of white flowers, fresh apricot and lime blossom. Hints of lightly aniseed chalk underline the complex aromas. The whole is pure, taut, with no excess of wood, which is already very well integrated.

The palate is seductive with its straightforward minerality. The tension of the attack remains delicate. The mid-palate, full of yellow fruit, is carried by a sapid acid framework. A fine chalky bitterness on the finish prolongs the wine with elegance. The substance remains restrained, in the refined style of Domaine Matrot, and full of the finesse of this little-known but remarkable terroir.
