Wine Description
Domaine Trapet Père et Fils 's Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur is born just a stone's throw from the Grand Cru climats that dominate this part of Burgundy's Côte de Nuits. Clos Prieur, divided into two parcels totalling 40 ares just below Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru, has belonged to the Domaine Trapet estate since 1893, when it was acquired just after the phylloxera crisis, when the vineyard was replanted with American rootstocks. The thin, very stony brown limestone soils combine fine marl and limestone pebbles, ensuring excellent drainage for the old vines. This particular geological configuration explains the natural uprightness of this Gevrey Chambertin Premier Cru. The biodynamic viticulture practised by the wine estate is based on careful tillage, the absence of chemical inputs and respect for lunar cycles. Hand harvesting precedes spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. Ageing can last from 12 to 18 months, and takes place exclusively in oak barrels, with a variable proportion of new wood.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin : Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur from Domaine Trapet Père et Fils rivals its Grands Crus neighbors in finesse and elegance. The climate of this Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru imbues the wines with a fleshy depth, firmness and length made eminently graceful by the style of Domaine Trapet, and naturally equips the wine for harmonious evolution over a decade or so.
The nose opens with a fruity palette of small red and black berries, mingled with floral notes of violet and rose petal. Accents of black pepper, clove and licorice add a generous complexity that gives this Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru its character.
On the palate, fleshy, ripe red and black fruit flavors are enlivened by a freshness that balances density. Fine, slightly chalky tannins accompany the spicy, licorice and black pepper aromas typical of this Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru. The very fine length of the finish is adorned with a minerality that revives the sap of the fruit and the freshness of the spices.
