Benoit Lahaye is a winemaker with a tiny wine estate of less than 5 hectares in the Bouzy Grand Cru. The terroirs on the Montagne de Reims offer one of the greatest diversity of terroirs in Champagne.

Champagne, as we often forget, is above all a great wine of terroir. In stark contrast to the commercial vision of standardized, emotionless taste that still characterizes most of the major champagne houses, here's a fabulous winemaker.

It was in 1993 that Benoit Lahaye decided to take over the family wine estate. It was then that he set out his personal vision of Champagne wine. For him, the identity of the soil, its purity and expression take precedence over all other considerations.

Now supported by his wife Valérie Lahaye and their two sons Etienne and Valentin, the wine estate is evolving and overturning traditional habits. Very early on, Benoit abandoned mechanized farming and returned to horse-drawn ploughing. Horses do far less damage than tractors. In the same way, it was obvious for him and his whole family to convert to biodynamic viticulture, which is still very rare in Champagne.

In terms of winemaking, Benoit Lahaye's Champagnes are above all produced to highlight the expression of the Bouzy terroir. Thanks to barrel fermentation, Benoit Lahaye adds depth to his champagne wines. He has considerably reduced and even eliminated sulfur in certain cuvées, such as Violaine.
