Long description

A centuries-old Loire signature

Born of the union of two winegrowing lineages from the Pays Nantais region, Domaine Luneau-Papin has been immersed in the Loire wine region since the end of the XVIIᵉ century. Recent history began in 1990, when Pierre Luneau and Monique Papin brought together the family vineyards of Le Landreau and La Chapelle-Heulin to create a unique entity in the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, twenty kilometers from Nantes. From the 1990s onwards, the wine estate asserted its style with parcel-based cuvées that emphasized Muscadet as a wine of terroir and ageing potential.

In the early 2000s, the estate began to pass on its heritage. Between 2005 and 2008, their son Pierre-Marie and his wife Marie became involved in the wine estate. This marked the beginning of an overhaul of the wine estate, whose 27 hectares are now farmed organically (certified in 2013) and biodynamically (certified in 2019), and according to an artisanal model. In 2018, Pierre and Monique retired, passing the torch to the 9th generation, embodied by Pierre-Marie and Marie.

The Pays Nantais told plot by plot

In the heart of the Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation, the geological diversity of Domaine Luneau-Papin 's 47 parcels is exceptional. Here, gneiss, granite, schist, micaschist, serpentinite and peridotite make up a veritable mineral puzzle, giving rise to singular expressions of Melon de Bourgogne, the estate's sole grape variety, which unfolds like an exceptional interpreter. Long underestimated, here it reveals its true nature: a chameleon grape variety, capable of precisely translating the slightest nuance of soil and climate. Its delicate flesh, chiselled acidity and remarkable ageing capacity make it an ideal vehicle for expressing terroir.

In the expert hands of Pierre Marie and Marie Luneau, each wine transmits the singular vibrations of its soil: gneiss brings finesse and length, granite imparts tension and salinity, while peridotites, from the depths of the earth, deliver a spicier, more powerful texture. This geological richness is more than just decoration: it is the very essence of the wine estate's parcel-by-parcel approach. Each plot is identified, worked and vinified separately to preserve its typical character: this is the signature of Domaine Luneau Papin.

The vines are cultivated biodynamically, on soils worked without herbicides, with ploughing that respects the natural balance. Harvesting is exclusively by hand, to preserve the integrity of the bunches, and yields are strictly controlled to concentrate the organoleptic qualities of each plot.

This careful attention to detail continues naturally in the cellar. Fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, with no artificial or superfluous intervention. Ageing is adapted to each cuvée: most are aged in underground concrete vats covered with glass tiles. Some are aged in Austrian wooden tuns, while others are aged in terracotta amphorae or stoneware jars. All wines are aged on fine lees without racking, and the duration of ageing varies according to cuvée and vintage. This approach faithfully reflects the diversity of soils and the specific energy of each plot.

A thousand and one nuances of Muscadet

At Domaine Luneau Papin, the parcel-by-parcel approach reveals every nuance of the Pays Nantais terroir. For example, the vines of the Coteaux de la Butte de la Roche give birth to the Terre de Pierre cuvée. A volcanic expression derived from peridotite and serpentinite, its spicy structure and remarkable depth combine with a taut structure and a persistent finish.

Gula Ana expresses all the finesse of granite soils, revealed by ageing in concrete tanks on fine lees. This Domaine Luneau-Papin cuvée is distinguished by its saline tension, vibrant freshness and delicate minerality, reflecting the purity of Melon de Bourgogne.

Le Verger reflects the particularity of the clay-granitic soils of a cooler, well-exposed parcel. Its saline tension and fruity vivacity give it a precise, refreshing crispness.

Granite and gneiss soils reveal straighter, more chiselled profiles, like Vera Cruz. Ageing on fine lees in foudres and jars highlights stunning freshness, sculpted texture and superb aromatic complexity.

An exception to the Luneau Papin parcel-based approach, L'd'Or is a flagship wine made from a precise blend of the estate's best hillsides. Aged in foudres and concrete vats depending on the batch, its richness and elegance are magnified by its mineral length on the palate.

Finally, the Excelsior cuvée, classified as a Cru communal Goulaine, reflects the singularity of granitic soils mixed with micaschists. Ageing in concrete vats and tuns gives it intensity, amplitude and structure, with refined aromas and an elegant minerality that characterize its unique personality.
