Le Vieux Donjon is a family-owned wine estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. It is owned by the Michel family, which has been producing wine for several generations. Initially, in the 1900s, the Le Vieux Donjon wine estate produced wine solely for bulk sale in the Rhône Valley. In fact, this was not their main business at the time, as they primarily manufactured barrels. It was in the late 1970s that Lucien Michel decided to expand the wine estate, eventually coming to own more than 13 hectares of vineyards. Marie José, his wife and an agricultural engineer, developed the viticulture practices to produce high-quality wines. Lucien Michel handled the business side and decided in the early 1980s to sell 95% of his production for export—a difficult choice at first, but one the couple fully embraced.

Today, their children have taken over the wine estate. They are reclaiming the French market, which continues to seek out their prized wines. Indeed, this wine estate undoubtedly produces some of the finest age-worthy Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines. Consistency is their strength, but so is their constant willingness to reevaluate their approach in order to bring out the best in their various terroirs.
