Le Vieux Donjon ’s 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape white is an absolute rarity. In an appellation where white wine accounts for only 10% of total production, the wine estate offers just one cuvée per vintage. Founded in 1966 by Marcel Michel, the wine estate is now run by the entire Michel family: Lucien and Marie-José, joined by their daughter Claire Fabre in 2008, and then by François in 2013. This patient, seamless transition is evident in every bottle.
The wine comes from a single-hectare plot in Cabrières, planted on alluvial soils composed of a mixture of sand, molasses, and rounded pebbles. These well-drained, nutrient-poor soils force the vines to root deeply. The vines are over 80 years old. At this age, the vines no longer produce much; instead, they concentrate their essence. The blend is straightforward: 50% Roussanne and 50% Clairette, in equal parts. The Roussanne contributes body, depth, and a slight pastry-like quality. The Clairette provides structure, tension, and freshness. The balance between the two is the hallmark of this white wine.
The Michel family practices de facto organic viticulture—without formal certification—according to a philosophy they themselves call “Reasonable Farming.” The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard, and picked late to ensure low yields. In the cellar, the approach is radical: ageing in stainless-steel tanks for 6 months, with malolactic fermentation halted. Whereas most whites from the appellation are aged in oak barrels or concrete tanks, the Vieux Donjon preserves the raw fruit and aromatic purity. This is what makes it so unique withinthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
This white is among the best in the entire appellation. Its style stands in stark contrast to the opulent, oaky, and sometimes heavy whites that are all too common here. The 94/100 rating awarded by *Revue des Vins de France* says it all: this is a great wine for fine dining, not just an everyday white. Its exclusive production—just one white cuvée per vintage from a single hectare—makes it one of the hardest-to-find wines in the Rhône. It’s a pleasure to drink now, but it will age well: the freshness and structure of this 2023 give it several more years ahead of it.
The nose
The nose opens with a palette that is both luminous and precise. Notes of apricot, mirabelle plum, and citrus come to the fore immediately, with a slight exotic undertone. After a few minutes in the glass, a subtle floral touch emerges, with hints of honeysuckle and dried flowers. Crushed stone, almost chalky, signals the terroir in the background. It is pure, clean, and unmistakable.
On the palate
On the palate, the attack is invigorating and juicy, carried by fresh, well-defined acidity. The texture is creamy without ever feeling heavy. The Roussanne gradually reveals itself, with that characteristic hint of pastry, but the Clairette keeps the whole wine on a straight and elegant path. The finish is long, flavorful, and slightly briny. A white wine of rare depth given its ageing method.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most prestigious appellations in the southern Rhône Valley. Its terroir, famous for the rounded pebbles accumulated on the plateaus, retains heat during the day and releases it at night. For white wines, the primary grape varieties are Roussanne and Clairette. They account for only 10% of the AOC’s total production. That speaks to the rarity of what’s in this glass.
The Vieux Donjon blanc de blancs is atypical in this region. While many seek richness and fullness, this wine focuses on precision and freshness. Ageing in stainless-steel tanks, halted malolactic fermentation, and eighty-year-old vines growing on gravel: all these factors combine to create a wine of unusual purity for this latitude. A white wine from the south that never forgets it must remain vibrant.
