Comte Abbatucci, a historic Corsican wine estate
The Comte Abbatucci estate is part of Corsican vineyard history. In the 1970s, Antoine Abbatucci decided to create a conservatory of Corsican grape varieties. Unfortunately, most of them had already disappeared from the Corsican winegrowing landscape by that time, but he succeeded in safeguarding 18 endemic grape varieties that constitute a treasure trove for the winegrowing heritage of the Isle of Beauty.
It was Jean-Charles Abbatucci, Antoine's son, who succeeded in exploiting this veritable goldmine to the full, producing several cuvées, all equally singular and delicious. Taking advantage of the quality of the granitic arena terroir and the predominantly northerly exposure of his vineyards, which prevents the grapes from over-ripening, Jean-Charles has gradually established his whites and reds at the very top of the hierarchy of Corsican wines, and more generally of southern wines.
Rare endemic grape varieties preserved
Blended from such rare grape varieties as Barbarossa, Brustiano, Carcajolo Bianco and Pagga Debiti, this biodynamic winemaker literally bewitches us with his deep, lively wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity, sometimes evoking crisp, juicy fruit, sometimes a procession of spices or the aromas of the maquis.
Here, even more than elsewhere, nature reigns supreme: ploughing by horse, weed control by sheep, homeopathic application of plant preparations and herbal teas with curative or simply energizing virtues.
The winemaking process is just as respectful. Fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts, and ageing is carried out on fine lees without stirring, adapting each bottle size for each cuvée to ensure that the fruit is as pure as possible. The result is quite simply magnificent mastery, and it's not for nothing that it's ranked 3 stars in the RVF.
The Abbatucci family have given very specific cuvée names to their wines. Cuvées Faustine, Diplomate, Général and Ministre are all part of their collection.
