Romain Le Bars is part of a generation of winemakers from the southern Rhône who are making a strong mark, breaking away from traditional conventions. Based in Tavel, he creates authentic, precise wines, often classified as “Vin de France” to better free himself from appellation constraints.
The story begins in Paris. Romain left his law studies to pursue a career in the restaurant industry, then discovered natural wine thanks to a bottle of Tavel from Domaine de l’Anglore, made by Éric Pfifferling. It was love at first sip. He joined the wine estate in 2012 and worked there for seven years, learning from his mentor the precision and high standards required for natural viticulture. In 2018, he began winemaking in his garage using grapes from one hectare of leased vineyards. Things moved quickly, but without haste: recognition came with his very first vintages.
Year after year, he expanded his wine estate—and his winery—until it reached its current size of about ten hectares, located between Tavel and Lirac, all cultivated with respect for the soil and living organisms. The plots consist of sand, rounded pebbles, and red clay typical of the region. Mediterranean grape varieties are naturally the focus: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and sometimes a bit of Mourvèdre or Clairette, depending on the cuvée. The blend varies depending on the plots, the vintage, and the winemaker’s inspiration. The vineyards are managed with care: gentle tillage, homemade compost, hand harvest, and no synthetic products. In the cellar, a natural approach is also prioritized: whole-cluster maceration, often carbonic to preserve the fruit, without yeasts or additives, using just a little sulfur if necessary. Romain Le Bars champions a simple yet committed approach: working cleanly and letting the grapes speak for themselves.
His distinctive style relies on infusion rather than extraction. The wines are taut and fluid, with a lovely aromatic persistence. The Tavel Rosé stands out as one of the appellation’s most exciting wines—refined, subtle, and far removed from the genre’s stereotypes. The Lirac Rosé, while more full-bodied, nevertheless retains that immediate drinkability that is the wine estate’s strength. As for the reds, Pousse Cailloux offers a supple, accessible, and indulgent interpretation of the “galets roulés” terroir, while its Lirac Rouge is a vibrant, infused wine that breaks away from the appellation’s traditional conventions to offer a free-spirited expression full of finesse.
A common thread runs through all his wines: the pursuit of purity, an emphasis on terroir rather than stylistic effects, and a rejection of technical artifice. Romain Le Bars engages in winemaking the way he lives: with consistency, patience, and a kind of joyful radicalism. The southern Rhône has found in him a unique, deeply rooted, and free voice.
