Domaine Meyer-Fonné's Pinot Noir Réserve embodies one of the most masterful expressions of Pinot Noir in Alsace, bringing together several complementary terroirs in a cuvée of astonishing depth. Produced from vines planted almost thirty years ago, this wine is made from three carefully selected parcels: the marl-limestone soils of Bennwihr, which provide density and structure, the granite of Katzenthal, a source of finesse and tension, and the marl-gravel terroir of Ammerschwihr, which gives the wine its aromatic elegance and freshness. This interplay between the different soils creates a balanced, expressive cuvée, true to the spirit of the Meyer-Fonné wine estate. The organic viticulture of the vineyard is rigorous, with controlled yields favoring the natural concentration of the grapes. Winemaking begins with total de-stemming, followed by cold pre-fermentation maceration for around a week, then two weeks of active fermentation with gentle pumping over and a few moderate punchings of the cap. Ageing is carefully carried out in barrels of several wines, without excessive extraction to preserve the fruit, texture and drinkability of the Pinot Noir.
Philippe Mischler sommelier at Mundovin : Domaine Meyer-Fonné 's Pinot Noir Réserve has become, vintage after vintage, a benchmark for affordable Alsace reds. This wine is a little jewel of balance, always just right, always elegant. In the wine estate's range, it precedes more ambitious cuvées such as Gallus or Altenbourg, but already stands out for its consistency, precision and deliciousness. It's a wine for immediate pleasure, but also for gastronomy, now found on the finest tables, and which Pinot Noir enthusiasts are learning to recognize and seek out even beyond Alsace.
On the nose, the wine expresses itself with intensity and delicacy, with crisp notes of redcurrant, wild strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. The whole is bright and juicy, with an assertive pinot. Already perfectly expressive, it will gain in finesse with a few years' rest.
The palate is fresh, greedy and very silky. Notes of red and black berries dominate, with some fine spice aromas. Tight, melted tannins structure the material and balance the crisp acidity of the fruit. The finish is caressing, marked by juicy, persistent greediness.
