Wine Description
Pique-Basse’s Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Roaix Ventabren is a cuvée from a single vineyard, with a single variety, from a single location—a bottle that expresses its terroir with unparalleled purity. This Syrah, planted in 1975, grows in the foothills of the Ventabren massif, in the hamlet of Croix de Cornu, on clay soil composed of yellow and white marl. Olivier Tropet cultivates his vines without herbicides or chemical fertilizers, performs a hand harvest, and uses very little sulfur in the cellar to preserve the fruit’s character. Pique-Basse, a name inspired by the locality known as Piquebas, is said to mean “low podium”—a sense of humility found in every bottle.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin: The Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Roaix Ventabren from Pique-Basse is a Syrah that surprises with its freshness where one might expect warmth, and with its length where one might expect power. Olivier Tropet is contributing to the revival of the Rhône’s talented winemakers; discreet, precise, and faithful to his land. Here, he has crafted a red wine full of character, shaped by sincerity.
The nose opens with smoky notes of black pepper and blond tobacco, before evolving into a dark and precise profile—the unmistakable signature of Syrah grown on marl, without pretense or artifice.
The palate, with its long, spicy finish, pairs beautifully with the freshness of the smooth, taut, and still tightly structured tannins. The finish is clean, lively, and lingering.
