The Morgon Cuvée Camille is a single-vineyard cuvée from Domaine Marcel Lapierre, a founding figure of the natural wine movement in the Beaujolais region. It comes from a single, registered plot of 1.054 hectares on the Côte du Py in Morgon. Due to its tiny size and an unwavering commitment to strict selection, its prestige matches its rarity. This cuvée bears a name with a dual history: that of Camille Lapierre, Marcel’s daughter, who now crafts the wine, and that of her grandfather, Marcel’s father. Three generations are united in this tribute cuvée.
The plot enjoys a southwest exposure on shallow, weathered granite soils. This well-drained, nutrient-poor subsoil forces the roots to dig deep. It shapes the Gamay into its most taut, most mineral expression. The thin soil naturally concentrates the vine’s essence. No intervention is needed: the terroir does the work. The result is evident in the aromatic concentration and the mineral character that permeates the entire wine.
The wine estate practicescertified organic farming, with a committed natural wine philosophy: native yeasts, minimal sulfiting at bottling, and no fining or filtration. The grapes are harvested by hand. Winemaking relies on traditional semi-carbonic maceration, conducted entirely in truncated-cone wooden vats. The maceration period is deliberately longer than for the estate’s other cuvées: this approach extracts the depth of the tannins without being too harsh on them. The wine undergoes ageing for 9 months in old 216-liter barrels. These aged, neutral vessels allow the fruit and granite to shine through.
Philippe Mischler, sommelier at Mundovin
Within the wine estate’s lineup, the Cuvée Camille holds a special place. It is the single-vineyard cuvée—one produced in limited quantities and never diluted. The Gamay grown on granite soils of the Côte du Py reveals here its most structured, most vertical expression. This wine has the density of a great Morgon and the precision of a cuvée crafted by a winemaker who knows every vine in his plot. It is expected to reach its peak drinking period between 2027 and 2035: it’s worth the wait, or at least should be decanted an hour before serving at 16°C. At the table, pairing it with a pork chop seasoned with three peppers and a buttered dish of Jerusalem artichokes with cardamom is no trivial suggestion: spice calls for spice, and the wine’s body effortlessly holds its own against the dish’s richness.
The Nose
The nose opens with morello cherry and ripe plum, with a depth of black fruit in the background. Spicy notes emerge quickly—subtle hints of pepper and clove. A mineral touch of weathered granite slips into the background, firm and persistent.
Palate
On the palate, the attack is clean, and the fruit is immediate. The body is full and ample, supported by silky tannins, well-integrated thanks to semi-carbonic maceration. The acidity provides structure without harshness. The finish is long and spicy, with a mineral persistence that reminds us of this wine’s origins.
Morgon is one of the ten municipal appellations of Beaujolais, and undoubtedly the most complex to understand. Its terroir consists of weathered schist and granite, particularly concentrated in the Côte du Py, its most renowned lieu-dit. These soils give Gamay a depth and aging potential that are rare in the region. Locally, there’s even a term—“morgonner”—which refers to the wine’s transformation with age, developing more complex, tertiary notes.
The Cuvée Camille stands at the heart of Morgon’s finest expressions. Sourced from a single plot on the Côte du Py and vinified without compromise, it embodies the uniqueness of this appellation: a Gamay unlike any other, shaped by granite that never lies.
